Curriculum: Midwife 2014
The expected fields of activity of the graduatesA midwife instructs, monitors, maintains and advises women and their families during pregnancy and childbirth, during the postpartum period and upon the solution of any gynecological problems; manages births at her or his own risk, advises and assists nursing, cares and monitors the newborns and infants. He or she participates in health education and family planning on the individual, family and society levels. Graduates will receive a diploma on completion of the curriculum in midwifery and the profession of a midwife and a general nurse, which gives the right to work as a midwife and a general nurse in all health care areas, in the public, private and third sectors in Estonia and in the EU countries.
AimTo guarantee an internationally accredited quality professional higher education for working in health care sphere and to enable the student to acquire necessary competencies for working in midwife and nurse profession, and for continuing one’s studies on Master level.
Conditions for completion of the curriculumThe curriculum contains 10 modules (270 ECTS)

1. Has a systematic overview of the main concepts of mifwifery/nursing, possesses theoretical knowledge, practical skills and ethical attitudes to express tolerance towards value judgements of the patient/client and colleagues. 2. Applies process-based midwifery/nursing care connecting professional theory, practice and holistic approach with a human individual, as well as possesses readiness to provide independent midwifery/nursing care bearing responsibility as an employee or employer. 3. Is able to explain and discuss in Estonian and in English speciality related problems and depending on the problem provide safe midwifery/nursing care. 4. Knows and takes into consideration the customs, value judgements and attitudes of people from different cultures and subcultures by actively participating in citizen society. 5. Is able to apply teaching, leadership and management related knowledge into one’s professional activity and possesses readiness to life-long self-directed learning and professional improvement. 6. Is able to apply the principles of teamwork in one’s professional activity on the level of an individual and the society in cooperation with representatives of various disciplines. 7. Is able to without prejudice to the interests of the patient/client gather necessary information, to analyse it critically and creatively and to apply the results obtained into professional activity. 8. Has knowledge of research principles and their application possibilities in the development of the profession using variety of information and communication technologies. 9. Has complied with the requirements of the EU Directive on the profession of a midwife and a nurse. Other languagesEnglish.
Study optionsIn addition to compulsory subjects, there are also optional subjects in the volume of 10 ECTS that support the achieving of the objectives in study programme and create opportunities to realize the individual needs and intellectual interests of students.
AdmissionSecondary school leaving certificate, vocational secondary school leaving certificate, or a corresponding qualification.
Graduation conditionsCompleting study programme in full volume and final paper/final exam passed with positive grade.
