Curriculum: Dental Technician 2014
The expected fields of activity of the graduatesA graduate of the specialty of Dental Technology has the knowledge and skills of the technology for manufacturing of dentures and orthodontic apparatuses, the human body, the methodology of research and development, team work and development of the profession. The main field of activity is the dental technology profession, particularly the work of a dental technician in the dental technological laboratory. The curriculum also allows graduates to be a manager in an establishment manufacturing dentures, in a company mediating dental technical products in Estonia as well as abroad and as a dental technology teacher after 3 years of experience as a dental technician and completion of continuing education.
AimThe curriculum objective is to prepare dental technicians with applied higher education who possess the knowledge and skills for producing dentures to be installed into oral cavity and to produce orthodontic apparatuses, to compose applied research with the readiness to develop the profession.
Conditions for completion of the curriculumBrief description of curriculum:
Volume of speciality subjects: 110 ECTS Volume of basic subjects: 65 ECTS Volume of practical training: 60 ECTS (28% of curriculum volume) Volume of final exam/ final work: 5 ECTS Volume of elective and optional subjects: 5 ECTS Volume of contact studies: not more than 54% from total volume of curriculum theory studies. The curriculum is divided into four courses: course I, II, III 60 ECTS and course IV - 30 ECTS. Learning outcomesThe graduate:
1.Has a systematic overview of main theoretical concepts of dental technology, material qualities and technologies used in making dental prostheses. 2.Knows the dental speciality application possibilities and current issues, is able to formulate, analyze, and relate them to other specialities and offer different solutions. 3.Orientates in evidence-based professional information, is able to independently collect, critically analyze, and use the information. 4.Is able to prepare dentures and orthodontic treatment appliances using appropriate methods and technologies, uses foresight and is able to critically assess potential consequences. 5.Possesses necessary skills in management, entrepreneurship and teamwork needed to work as dental technician. 6.Is able, in Estonian and in English, to explain dental equipment problems orally and in writing, using modern tools of information technology and communication technology. 7.Is able to apply acquired knowledge and skills into work, dental technicians are ready to act, guided by their professional ethics. 8.Understands the principles of lifelong learning and professional development opportunities and possibilities, keeps abreast of the latest achievements in dental technology. Study optionsIn addition to compulsory subjects, there are also optional and elective subjects in the volume of 5 ECTS that support the achieving of the objectives in study programme and create opportunities to realize the individual needs and intellectual interests of students.

Graduation conditionsPassing study programme in full volume, and final exam or final thesis passed with positive grade.
